Who Is It For?

LEADING EDGE is for business owners and entrepreneurs positioning for growth stage, that desire focused education and planning, accountability, networking, and the tools to build a strategic business plan to take their company to the next level.

What To Expect

  • Eight 2-hour sessions held on Tuesdays and Thursdays (The first session and graduation must be in person, all sessions in between can be either in person or streamed.
  • Discussions, guest speakers, and LivePlan working sessions with subject matter experts
  • Continuous feedback on your business plan and strategy during the course
  • Free subscription to LivePlan that continues 3 months after the program
  • Free registration to workshops at the Larimer SBDC while enrolled
  • 5 minutes to present your strategy to your peers on Graduation Day. You will walk away with a completed business plan, multiple mentors, and a key network of resources, champions and friends!

Graduation Requirements

  • No more than two unexcused absences from the training series
  • Completing at least 3 hours of one-on-one consulting throughout the course
  • Turning in a completed business plan by the end of the course

The LEADING EDGE™ Entrepreneurship Series is a hands-on, step-by-step strategic business planning program for early-stage businesses across any industry. Through this 4-weeks Cohort Series—with expert help all along the way—you can test the feasibility of positioning your company for growth, solidify your business model and build a road map in LivePlan. You can finish the series with an actionable, strategic business plan to access potential financing or to use as a blueprint to manage your business.

The LEADING EDGE Entrepreneurship Series makes you an active participant in a program designed for (and with) entrepreneurs just like you. Facilitators and guest presenters are knowledgeable entrepreneurs and specialists who are attuned to the issues you will face every day. Thoughtful, insightful—and above, all practical—the series covers all aspects of successful business planning for growth.

What You Will Learn

• All the steps to becoming an official business – registering with the state, legal entity understanding, local registrations, license requirements
• The Business Model Canvas – a one page business plan outline to think through all the elements of running a business
• Marketing Plan considerations
• Budget fundamentals
• How the SBDC can support your on your journey

This workshop is full of information, hands-on activities to get those ideas out of your head and into a tangible format, and a stepping stone to further resources. Optional follow up activities include meeting with a SBDC consultant, signing up for a class, accessing On Demand videos, or finding a meetup group with other small business founders, owners and entrepreneurs.

Business Plan 201 will help participants present their business idea to lenders, investors and customers while providing a roadmap for its successful operation and management.

The 9 Stages for All Transactions – This program will identify and outline those 9 stages for both buyer and seller to provide an understanding of, and confidence in, the upcoming experience.

While buyers and sellers have very different needs which must be aligned, the more that they share in an understanding of the process, the greater the chance for success in closing the transaction. To that end, the 9 steps of a business sale that we will cover are:

  • Initial Exploration
  • Listing & Market Prep
  • In the Market
  • Initial Due Diligence & Qualify
  • Receiving / Managing Offers
  • Extended Due Diligence
  • Purchase Agreement
  • Closing the Transaction
  • Post Closing

Understanding Business Valuation – In this 90 minute virtual seminar we focus specifically on how to determine what the value of a business is.

Designed to educate both buyers and sellers, we will focus on the best practice methodologies that are most commonly used in small business sales (under $10 million).

In addition, we will look at how SBA lenders will evaluate a deal since their participation is almost always required for a successful transaction.

Offers, Contracts and Closing – In this 90 minute virtual seminar we focus specifically on the 3 components of the sale that require both parties to enter into agreements, and what those agreements must cover.

Beginning with how and why to make an offer on a business, the program moves on to entering into a formal purchase contract, and then finally to what goes on at the closing table.

As always, these seminars are designed for both buyers and sellers, we believe it is important that both sides of a transaction are as knowledgeable and prepared as possible.

Topics being covered in this series will include:

• Email is part of our daily work lives, but it’s also integral for building relationships with leads and maintaining relationships with customers, partners, and employees. In this class, you will learn how to write messages with the audience in mind.

• Listening can be challenging since we often want to present our own ideas, but listening is an important part of communication. Because we are also the recipients of others’ ideas, developing listening skills can help us establish credibility with our colleagues, demonstrate empathy, avert difficult situations and conversations, overcome obstacles, and generally help us be better leaders.

• You don’t have to be a professional writer to do your job, BUT you can use strategies professional writers use to make your job easier. This class will teach you a 7-question process–developed through research on how professional writers plan, neuroscience, and effective outcomes–so that you can write anything faster and better.
